We’re committed to reducing emissions of fluorinated organic chemicals (FOCs) by at least 99% by 2030. We’ve invested more than $75 million in technologies at our Viton™ manufacturing facility in Europe that are making this a reality—from diverting air emission streams to carbon filtration or thermal oxidation to installing a state-of-the-art water treatment plant with unprecedented high efficiency. These investments reflect our willingness to go above and beyond industry standards to keep fluorinated substances out of the air, water, and land.

Proven to Reduce Environmental Impact

Space exploration and satellites rely on advanced engine and propulsion technologies that require parts durable enough to operate in the harshest and most demanding conditions. Making repairs and conducting maintenance on these spacecraft and satellites is often a costly, resource-intensive process. Viton™ fluoroelastomers are the ideal polymer for sealing applications in these critical pieces of equipment. O-rings, seals, gaskets, and hoses made with Viton™ fluoroelastomers withstand the high temperatures and harsh chemicals present in modern aerospace systems. In doing so, these fluoroelastomers allow for longer equipment life, less frequent replacement of parts during maintenance, and improved safety by avoiding equipment failures.

Regulators today are imposing new and more stringent regulations on exhaust and evaporative emissions of passenger vehicles, including internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid vehicles. Reducing permeation through components in the fuel system is crucial to limiting evaporative emissions. Using fluoroelastomers to produce components of the fuel system, such as hoses and seals, can limit permeation. One such example is the fuel sender seal. Historically, nitrile rubber (NBR) has been used for this application, but feedback from automotive OEMs suggests that NBR is no longer a viable option to meet new regulatory standards due to its limited permeation resistance to fuel. Our Viton™ fluoroelastomers outperform NBR in fuel sender seal applications, as they offer unmatched fuel permeation resistance to all relevant fuel mixtures, low-temperature sealing, and longevity to meet the stringent requirements for reducing evaporative emissions. Where NBR shows average fuel permeation values of 1025 g-mm/m2/day, Viton™ fluoroelastomers are 75- to over 900-times more resistant to fuel permeation depending on the selected grade.
